About the Project
Thanks to modern technology, we can now “build” projects virtually before we actually construct them physically. We demonstrated just how beneficial this is at Ahold in Zaandam. In this complex project, we collaborated with many parties using a 3D model. We used “clash detection” to identify potential issues in advance. After all, a conveyor belt obviously can’t run right through a column. And it’s also nice when an operator doesn’t bump their head on a cable tray.
The new distribution center may seem like a simple expansion of the existing complex. However, it is on an entirely different scale because the logistics are fully mechanized. As a result, the expansion has a high storage density and is extremely efficient.
Vicoma’s Role
We successfully managed the challenging design phase of this project. We reviewed Ahold’s Statement of Requirements and then developed the full technical design of the project in 3D. For such a complex, fully mechanized project, this offers enormous advantages because “clashes” are detected early on and all disciplines collaborate seamlessly. In addition to the technical development, we oversaw the bidding process for the BREEAM certification and provided advice on the interior’s “look and feel” to create a pleasant work environment.
Result
A fully mechanized “high-density storage” system. Efficient, safe, and user-friendly. A project unique to the Netherlands.
