HES Botlek Tank Terminal: Expansion of the 25 kV Connection

About the Project

HES Botlek Tank Terminal wanted to expand by adding two tank pits, each containing eighteen tanks. To make this possible, it was necessary to expand the 25 kV electrical system. This was not feasible within the existing substation, so the 25 kV connection had to be upgraded in collaboration with the grid operator. HES asked us to carry out the basic engineering for the electrical portion of the project.

The Role of Vicoma

We drew up the specifications for the 25 kV switchgear and the three-winding transformers. For the implementation, we prepared a complete electrical engineering specification. In it, we described the work involved in installing the new 25 kV switchgear and laying and connecting the cabling for the transformers. We also documented the process of transferring the existing transformers to the new switchgear. We took the pressure off HES by handling all coordination with the grid operator throughout the entire project. It was quite a job.

Result

A new “substation” with a new, fully redundant 25 kV switchgear. Thanks to our transition plan, the transition went smoothly, and HES Botlek Tank Terminal successfully commissioned the installation. Together, we can look back on a successful project.

Main question

How do you carry out the necessary expansion of the 25 kV system to accommodate eighteen new tanks at the terminal?

Result

The result is a new, fully redundant 25 kV substation that was brought online smoothly thanks to a carefully planned transition plan.
