About the Project
A new substation across from the Zaanstad Judicial Complex—an exciting challenge for which Liander called on our help.
The electrification of the Netherlands and the increasing strain on the power grid called for action here as well. The Q-team (“aesthetics”) wanted it to be more than just a standard utilitarian building.
Vicoma’s Role
Qirion and Liander submitted a preliminary design for a stacked substation. We further developed this basic design, with all disciplines contributing to the engineering process to produce a construction-ready design suitable for the contractor to prepare a bid.
Due to the Q-team’s high and specific requirements, the facade design deviates from Qirion’s standard. The traditional masonry facade has been replaced by an expanded metal facade, mounted against a backdrop of sandwich panels. Thanks to this semi-permeable facade, the building takes on a velvety appearance, which is enhanced by ecological features and the lush vegetation surrounding the building.
Result
A refreshing approach. The specific constraints challenged us to think differently and explore new materials and ecological principles. This valuable knowledge will certainly come in handy as we look toward a sustainable future.
