About the Project
Just north of the picturesque town of Medemblik lies a reclaimed area protected by seawalls. In this low-lying area, just below sea level and near the pumping station, there was a substation that needed to be replaced.
Vicoma’s Role
Qirion typically divides the design process into two phases: the preliminary design and the detailed design. Depending on their internal capacity, they bring us on board to provide support. In this case, we handled the architectural and structural lead engineering for the preliminary design. Qirion then took on the further detailed structural and construction development itself. However, Vicoma remained involved in incorporating the results into the 3D model.
What is unknown is unloved—even in Medemblik.
To address the concerns of local residents, we created renderings that provided insight into the station’s design and its careful integration into the surrounding area. We deliberately opted for a sense of unity in the area. By using light gray brick for the new substation, we sought—and found—harmony with the white-gray appearance of the surrounding buildings, including the Lely pumping station.
Result
Using minimal resources and based on the Qirion standard for modular construction, a building was designed that fits within the unique context of this environment. By making only minor modifications, we were able to give the substation its own character without compromising the technical requirements. This provides a solid foundation for moving on to the detailed design.
