About the Project
Qirion planned to build a new 50/10 kV substation on Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat to replace an existing substation. As an interim measure, they devised a temporary solution. Qirion asked us to design this temporary switchgear and transformer cells. The temporary solution is intended to take over the functionality of both the old and the new substations during demolition and new construction.
Vicoma’s Role
This design project presented a unique challenge. Due to the very limited space, Qirion and Liander chose to install four transformer cells on a plot that was already occupied and two medium-voltage switchgear rooms on a steel platform in the canal.
During the design phase, we took into account the potential effects on an adjacent historic monument and the risk of collisions. In addition, the security of the platform and the reusability of the transformer cells after construction were key considerations.
Based on the standard Qirion transformer cells, we developed a variant with “screw-on” components. This allows the entire structure to be disassembled after use and reused at another location. To do justice to the high-quality surroundings, we projected a pattern of canal-side buildings onto the facade, instead of the standard fluting in the concrete walls.
Result
A beautiful design, based on thorough studies, that offers a clear and feasible vision for further development. An integrated design, created through close collaboration between various disciplines. Vicoma knows exactly how to handle even the most challenging conditions in the heart of Amsterdam.
