A new substation opposite the Zaanstad Judicial Complex presented a significant challenge for which Liander sought our support. The electrification of the Netherlands and the increasing demand on the power grid necessitated action here as well. The Q-team (design review committee) aimed for more than just a standard utility building.

Vicoma’s Role
Qirion and Liander provided a conceptual design for a stacked substation. We further developed this base design, with input from all disciplines, progressing to a construction-ready design suitable for contractor pricing.
Due to the strict and specific requirements of the Q-team, the façade design departed from Qirion’s standard. The traditional brick façade was replaced with expanded metal mesh mounted on a backing of sandwich panels. This semi-permeable façade lends the building a velvet-like appearance, complemented by ecological features and the abundant plant life surrounding the structure.

A refreshing approach. The unique constraints challenged us to think innovatively and explore new materials and ecological principles; valuable knowledge that will undoubtedly aid us in constructing a sustainable future.
