Just north of the picturesque town of Medemblik lies a reclaimed area protected by sea dikes. In this low-lying region, situated below sea level and close to the pumping station, an ageing substation was due for replacement.
Vicoma’s Role
Qirion usually divides the design process into two phases: basic design and detailed design. Depending on their internal capacity, they call on us for support. In this case, we took the lead on architectural and structural engineering during the basic design phase. Qirion then handled the detailed architectural and structural development. Vicoma stayed involved to integrate the outcomes into the 3D model.
To address concerns from local residents, we created visualisations to illustrate the materialisation of the substation and its sensitive integration into the surroundings. We deliberately aimed for visual coherence in the area. By selecting a light grey brick for the new substation, we matched the white-grey tones of the neighbouring buildings, including the iconic Lely pumping station.
Result
With minimal resources and based on Qirion’s modular construction standard, a building was designed that fits harmoniously into this unique setting. By implementing just a few targeted adjustments, we gave the substation a distinct character without compromising technical requirements. A strong foundation was laid for the next phase: detailed design.
Familiarity breeds appreciation; a truth that proved evident in Medemblik as well.
